License Renewal
The downloads contained on this page should provide all of the information you will need to renew your current license or document. As a convenience to the mariner, MITAGS typically arranges the Radar Observer Renewal (ROR-1) course on an "on demand" basis during most days or evenings.
STCW-95 certified officers (engine and deck) with less that 360-days sea service in the last five years, or state Pilots that hold a STCW-95 certificate, will need to re-take Basic Safety Training (BST) to renew their STCW-95 certificate. MITAGS typically offers the BST course on a bi-monthly basis. Look for the abbreviation "BST" on the Course Schedule. Before enrolling in the BST program, please review the MITAGS "Special Course Requirements and General Information" Booklet, which outlines health and safety issues relating to the BST course.
Military Sealift Command (MSC) contracted mariners have a five-year renewal requirement for Advanced Fire Fighting. Look for the abbreviation "FF-BADV" on the course schedule for course convening dates of the combined Basic and Advanced Fire Fighting course.
Commercial mariners sailing on container ships, and certain other vessels, may require the three-year recurrent training in Hazardous Materials to satisfy the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Regulation 49 CFR, Part 172, Subpart H. Look for the abbreviation "HAZMAT" on the course schedule. Please note that this course is also typically offered on an "on demand" basis during most evenings.
Mariners that are trained as a Specimen Collector and/or Breath Alcohol Technician must take refresher training every five-years per 49 CFR, Part 40. Accordingly, MITAGS offers this refresher course on a regular basis. Look for the abbreviation "MED-DOT-DA" on the course schedule. Please note that this program also qualifies individuals for an original endorsement.
The American Heart Association Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate requires refresher training every two-years. MITAGS offers CPR and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) original and refresher training as part of the one-day Elementary First Aid course. Note that this course also qualifies an individual for an original endorsement. This course is typically taught on the Friday of a Basic Safety Training (BST) week. Please contact our Admissions Department for additional information on this program.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has published the Transportation Worker Identity Credential (TWIC) Final Rule on January 25, 2007, with an effective date of March 26, 2007. The rule will require maritime workers, and all mariners that need unescorted access to a Maritime Transportation Security Act (MTSA) regulated facility or vessel to possess the credential by September 25, 2008. During the eighteen month enrollment period, mariners may use their current Merchant Mariner Document (MMD), with a valid Driver’s License.
For additional information on TWIC, please visit the TSA or U.S. Coast Guard websites listed below under “Useful Links.” You may also call the U.S. Coast Guard TWIC Hotline at (877) 687-2243 or the U.S. Coast Guard TWIC Helpdesk via e-mail at uscg-twic-helpdesk@uscg.mil.
